BFA Thesis Work
“ After Too Much Thought, I’ve Decided Not To Be Alone” is a familiar story presented in an unfamiliar world. The body of woodcut relief prints focuses on the fictional narrative of a young girl’s journey to overcome social anxiety. In order for her to listen to the world, travel it and still hide from it, she builds antiquated devices such as, ear trumpets or funnels. These inventions are metaphors for defence mechanisms; walls used to hide our genuine selves. Those struggling with social anxiety go to great lengths to maintain these barriers when the only real obstacle is fear that is constructed from his or her own mind. To illustrate the feeling of being insufficient, the main character is depicted as a child and the composition of most pieces feel as if they are towering over her and viewers. This work parallels my own journey but in a more imaginative story. Those who struggle with social anxiety must keep growing to love who they are and be more comfortable with others. After Too Much Thought, I’ve Decided Not To Be Alone was created to initiate storytelling amongst those in search of community.

I love carving values into a linoleum or wood block. It can be a mindless activity, but the objects emerging from the block’s surface keep your attention. You don’t really know how the block looks until you pull the first print.

I love pencils and all they can do being such a basic material. Drawing was my first medium and I still believe all of the ways that I create are simply extensions of it. I start every project with a sketch, but a drawing is especially beautiful when it stands on its own as a finished work of art.
